Senator Sharif Street Announces $9,543,074 in Grants for Local Organizations in the 3rd Senate District

PHILADELPHIA − October 22, 2024 – Senator Sharif Street is pleased to announce the awardingof $9,543,074 in grant funding to various organizations and community projects throughout the 3rd Senate District. These funds, sourced from Local Share Account (LSA) grants, will support 18 diverse projects aimed at improving public spaces, enhancing community services, and bolstering infrastructure. The projects will have a direct and meaningful impact on residents, providing upgradedrecreational facilities, expanding workforce development programs, and improving the city’s resilience and accessibility.

“I am proud to support these vital investments in our district,” said Senator Street. “These projectsreflect our commitment to fostering a stronger, more equitable community and creating spaces that improve the quality of life for all residents. From playgrounds and libraries to essential public services, these funds will help build a brighter future for our neighborhoods.”

The following are the key projects receiving funding:

Cecil B. Moore Library
Enhancements to ADA accessibility, installation of a new HVAC system, new windows, and refreshed interior spaces.

Happy Hollow Playground
Rehabilitation of the 4.6-acre Happy Hollow Playground, including roof repairs, ADA improvements, and basketball court renovations.

Hunting Park Phase II
Improvements to sidewalks, ADA ramps, crosswalks, and stormwater management systems within Hunting Park.

Cambodian Association of Greater Philadelphia
Installation of ADA-accessible facilities, facade improvements, and office renovations at the organization’s North Philadelphia site.

Cherashore Playground
Renovation of the playground and recreation center, including the addition of a sprayground and sports equipment storage.

Spring Garden Community Development Corporation
Interior rehabilitation of a complex of Victorian buildings, transforming it into a civic engagement center.

Philadelphia Technician Training Institute
Purchase of new CNC machining equipment for the Philadelphia Technician Training Institute to expand workforce development opportunities.

Sanctuary Farms Philadelphia
Purchase and development of vacant lots into a community garden, including garden beds, irrigation systems, and other amenities.

Eastern State Penitentiary Visitor Hospitality Project
Replacement of portable restrooms with permanent, ADA-accessible restroom facilities, improving visitor experience at this historic site.

Fairmount Water Works Flood Mitigation
Installation of floodproof windows, doors, and other structural improvements to address recurring flooding at this historic site.

Lawncrest Recreation Center
Construction of new sports courts, playgrounds, and lighting at Lawncrest Recreation Center.

Nicetown Sports Court
Creation of outdoor recreational spaces, including basketball courts, futsal court, bocce ball courts, skate paths, and plazas.

People Advancing Reintegration Inc.
Expansion of the Recycle Works Program, a workforce training initiative for formerly incarcerated individuals, including the acquisition of a larger facility.

The Market Place/Beech Community Services
Redevelopment of a vacant property into a food market, food court, and business incubator space.

The Phoenix Redevelopment
Complete renovation of a vacant building to establish a community-driven facility for substance use recovery programs.

Traveling Tree House Bookmobile
Purchase and upfitting of a new bookmobile to expand literacy and book distribution programs.

Blaine Elementary School Window and Door Replacement Project
Replacement of exterior windows to resolve water infiltration issues, removal of asbestos, and installation of new interior doors for improved safety and accessibility.

Cayuga Elementary School Roof Replacement Project
Replacement of the 108-year-old building’s roof to address water infiltration, prevent mold and mildew, and improve indoor air quality.
